91pts Wine Enthusiast

This is a ripe wine with spice, juicy red fruits and a feeling of opulence. Full, fruity and rich, it's a wine for medium-term aging. Drink from 2017.

90pts James Suckling

This is fresh and clean with citrus and currant character. Medium body, fine tannins and a delicate finish. A little lean but I like it. Clarity of fruit here. Give it three or four years to soften.

90pts Vinous

Bright medium ruby. Subtle, vinous aromas of blackcurrant, sour red cherry, violet and minerals. Sweet and silky on entry, then tight in the middle, showing terrific purity and verve to the flavors of red fruits, sweet spices and flowers. Finishes sappy and lightly saline, with fine tannins and outstanding length. This terrific, perfumed wine is heavily marked by its Cabernet Franc presence.

90pts Wine Spectator

A textbook Pauillac, with a core of ripe cassis, cherry compote and blackberry fruit, spiked with iron, singed cedar and tobacco details that should emerge as this melds and softens. Best from 2015 through 2025.

Winemaker Notes

Chateau d'Armailhac, classified as a Fifth Growth in 1855, is a close neighbor of Chateau Mouton Rothschild. Its 123 acres of vines, surrounding the beautiful grounds of the main house, are planted with the typical varieties of the region: 57% Cabernet Sauvignon, 21% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot.

About the Winery

The estate, in the d'Armailhacq family since the 18th century and named Chateau Mouton d'Armailhacq after them, was acquired by Baron Philippe in 1933. Between 1956 and 1989, it was called successively Chateau Mouton Baron Phillipe then Chateau Mouton Baronne Phillipe. In 1989, Baroness Phillipine de Rothschild restored part of its original identity, renaming it Chateau d'Armailhac. The wine, aged in oak casks, combines finesse and elegance with powerful, well-structured tannins.
