95pts James Suckling

Pure and vivid with sliced lemons, apples, pear blossoms and ash that follow through to a medium body with focused fruit. The subtle and sophisticated finish shows hints of cream, honeysuckle and basalt. Delicious. Drink now or hold.

94pts Decanter

Clear and pale lemon, hints of yellow pulp fruit, floral bouquet of broom, citrus aromas of lemon, ginger, aromatic herbs. Fresh and mineral with a pleasant finish of citrus notes.

93pts Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Made in stainless steel only, the Maugeri 2023 Etna Bianco Superiore Contrada Volpare comes from four hectares at 700 meters in elevation with volcano soils and elevated organic matter. The estate is located in Milo on the eastern side of the volcano facing the Ionian Sea and gets more average annual rainfall and the mitigating effects of a marine climate. As far as southern Italian white wines go, this shows an extremely tight and mineral-driven personality. There is a hint of soft fruit that comes across as white peach and quince, but the wine will be remembered for its tension and focus. This white shines forth from what was a difficult vintage. Production is 2,000 bottles.

90pts Vinous

The 2023 Etna Bianco Superiore Contrada Volpare opens in the glass with a nuanced mix of wet stone, citrus zest and spice. It washes across the palate with soft and round textures offset by a gentle tinge of minerals and tart orchard fruit. The 2023 tapers off medium in length and clean, leaving a slightly salty sensation.

Winery Notes

Eastern Sicily: 83 terraces, stretching between Contrada Praino and Contrada Volpare, through the pathways of the Milo forest, 700 m above sea level, on the eastern slopes of Mount Etna, the highest active volcano in Europe.

Maugeri is the wine-growing project of an Etnean family, who have returned to their home district to make wine once more. The unbroken line of more than 2.8 km of lava dry-stone walling borders the 7 hectares of the property, an amphitheatre of fertile volcanic soil, in a close embrace with the Mediterranean landscape.

Grape Varietal: Carricante
