Vinous

I don't normally comment on hue, but the 2023 Sur Le Fort and many of the winery's offerings this vintage are a vibrant lemon yellow hue, which stands out from many Sancerres that are often a pale green. This is a clean and clear style with lively bite. It is medium-bodied with a sense of energy and attractively bitter grip on the finish. A year on lees has added a touch of biscotti to the floral and pineapple fruit. The 2023 has moderate concentration and length.

Tasting Notes

Exotic nose with notes of mango, honey and spices. Ample, almost mellow, mouthfeel, balanced on the edge by a slight sparkle of acidity which brings peps to the whole. Spicy yet smooth finish.

Pair with: Thai shrimp, seared tuna with sweet potatoes.

Winery Notes

The Fouassier family is one of the oldest winegrowing families in the village of Sancerre. Benoit and Paul Fouassier, cousins at the head of the estate today, are the 10th generation of Fouassier to have worked the estate's vines since 1742. The Fouassier family pioneered vinification by lieu-dit in the early 1980s. Since then, their work has focused on selecting the best parcels to express in the bottle the taste of the terroir on which the vines flourish. All work is carried out as naturally as possible, which is why the estate turned to organic and biodynamic farming over 15 years ago.

Sur Les Forts comes from a 4.45 hectare vineyard in the heart of Sancerre. Vines with annaverage age of 25 years are grown in soils with limestone from Buzançais and limestone "lités supérieurs" on lower "Kimmeridgien". The vineyard is cultivated using organic and biodynamic methods.
