95pts James Suckling

So lush, broad, luxurious and flavorful, this red is laden with black cherries, baked blueberries and baking spices on a velvety, tannic frame. Gorgeous, concentrated flavors of spearmint, cassis and cocoa expand on the palate and linger in the finish. Drink now or hold.

93pts Wine Spectator

A textbook ’23, this hums with lovely energy as juicy boysenberry and mulberry fruit shimmers along, flecked liberally with iris, violet and rose hip accents through the gently toasted finish. Best from 2027 through 2040.

92pts Wine Advocate

Louis Martini's workhorse wine (close to 6,000 cases produced) is now the 2023 Cabernet Sauvignon The Gryphon, as the entry-level Napa and Sonoma Cabernets have been discontinued. A blend of 82% Cabernet Sauvignon, 9% Cabernet Franc, 5% Malbec and 4% Merlot, about two-thirds of the blend comes from southern Napa, with 22% from mountain sites and 10% from Calistoga. Blueberries, cassis and vanilla mark the nose, while the medium- to full-bodied palate is framed by fine-grained tannins, with a long, silky finish.

92pts Vinous

The 2023 Cabernet Sauvignon The Gryphon is aromatic and punchy, both of which make it quite appealing in the early going. Blackberry, cloves, licorice and espresso build nicely in the glass. This deceptively medium-bodied wine has a lot to offer. Dollops of Cabernet Franc, Malbec and Merlot round out the blend. Give the tannins a year or two to soften.

Winemaker Notes

Sourced from premier vineyards across Napa Valley and made in the same small lot production facility used for Lot No. 1, The Gryphon is a distinct and distinguished perspective on Napa Cabernet Sauvignon, past and present.

About the Label

The gryphon is the traditional symbol of the town of Genoa, Italy, the birthplace of Louis Martini. This is where he set sail from the port in 1899 at the young age of 12 to join his father in America. Today, The Gryphon represents the journey Louis M. Martini embarked on to the Napa Valley, where his family would become established Cabernet Sauvignon icons.

The three sections of the gryphon’s tail represent the three generations of Martinis who have built the legacy of the brand over the past 90+ years: Louis M., Louis P., and Mike.
