Vinous
The NV Brut England, Champagne Pommery's English offering, comes from vines planted in 2017 at their Pinglestone Estate in Hampshire. This blend predominantly features Chardonnay, with Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier and Pinot Gris. Bright green apple and lemon freshness are vivid on the nose. The palate is equally pure and sprightly, absolutely light and bright. Frothy bubbles disperse immense freshness, making for a brisk aperitif. Disgorged: January 2024.
Tasting Notes
At first glance, the colour is a pretty scintillating pale yellow, in which the bubbles express themselves perfectly as they continuously rise. To the nose, the key word that comes to mind immediately is freshness but also finesse from the emerging aromas of lime. This finesse is beautifully coated in the second nose with aromas of blackcurrant and white fruit topped with a hint of honey.
These characters, perceived to the nose, follow through and are heightened on the palate, offering a beautiful balance and rich harmony. This English sparkling wine has a beautiful smooth mousse full of soft red fruit, a gentle apple skin note adds a crisp edge and further weight.
The palate continues with more crisp green fruit and a long pleasing finish. A well controlled dosage conceding no sweet sensation. Incredibly moreish this English sparkling wine will have you reaching for more and more. A beautiful example of an english sparkling wine.
About the Bubbles
From the vineyard planted in the distinctive terroir of southern England, where chalk is the dominant element of the soil, this English Sparkling Wine was made using the thoroughly classic and traditional method, building on the internationally renowned grape varieties that are Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Meunier.
The blend incorporates a majority of Chardonnay, contributing to its finesse and elegance, as well as a large proportion of Pinot Noir, which produces fruit and structure, and a touch of Pinot Meunier.
It is the Pommery style, expressed through the English terroir.
About the Winery
Louis Pommery first launched the England Brut with fruit purchased from nearby growers in Hampshire, but as of the end of 2023, sufficient wines made from Pinglestone Estate have reached maturity and it is now made solely from estate-grown fruit. It is world-class, and in a tasting alongside Pommery’s Champagne, we loved the English Sparkling Wine.
