96pts Jeb Dunnuck

From a higher-elevation parcel in Ravera at roughly 430 meters with east exposure, the 2022 Barolo Ravera pours a deeper ruby hue and offers up lush aromatics of blackberries, suede, lavender, and fresh earth. Medium-bodied, it combines youthful grip with balanced structure and length across the palate, while hints of blue fruit and cool forest tones give it a lifted character.

94pts James Suckling

A youthful Barolo with aromas of earth, clay, balsamic, iron and a hint of ester. Full-bodied, it shows austere tannins with a tight and dusty texture, crisp acidity and a balanced finish. Best from 2029."

93pts Wine Advocate

The Paolo Scavino 2022 Barolo Ravera is among the more expressive wines in this group of new releases, offering aromas of dark cherry, cassis, spice and licorice with greater clarity than many of its siblings. The tannins are firm, dusty and powdery, framing a compact, tightly structured palate that still needs ample time to fully reveal itself. With additional air, the bouquet expands to show clove, nutmeg, earthy nuances and violet, although the elevated alcohol becomes more apparent with time and adds a noticeable sense of warmth to the finish. This release of 4,680 bottles is fermented in stainless steel and aged for 19 months in large oak casks.

92pts Wine Enthusiast

There is weight here from the first breath, iron and crushed rock carrying dark cherry and black raspberry with a tension that rose alone cannot soften, something dark and deeply reduced moving quietly through the background. The palate is chewy and purposeful, blood orange and licorice weaving through black cherry and plum while savory herbs and earthy minerality claim the finish. Drink from 2028

Winemaker Notes

Paolo Scavino's 2022 Barolo Ravera is a distinguished expression of Nebbiolo from the esteemed Ravera cru in Novello, Piedmont. The 2022 vintage presented challenges with extreme drought and heat, leading to reduced yields but resulting in wines of surprising balance and freshness. This Barolo showcases the winery's commitment to purity and elegance, offering a vibrant profile with notable depth. Aged in a combination of French barrique, large cask, and stainless steel for two years, it reflects the unique terroir of the region. With an alcohol content of 15%, this wine is poised for aging, promising to evolve gracefully over the next decade.

Winery Note

Paolo Scavino is an historical winery in the Barolo region. It was founded in 1921 in Castiglione Falletto from Lorenzo Scavino and his son Paolo. Farming has always been a family tradition and passion.

Enrico Scavino together with the daughters Enrica and Elisa, fourth generation, run the family Estate. He started to work full time in the winery in 1951 when he was 10 years old. A young winemaker who inherited the passion and devotion for the land he belongs to. Through over 60 years of experience his focus has been to invest on important cru of Nebbiolo to show the uniqueness of each terroir.

Their work is inspired by the love and respect they have for their territory and they pursue purity of expression, complexity and elegance for their wines from the three local grapes Dolcetto, Barbera and Nebbiolo.
