94pts Decanter
2023 was a very good year for the Cabernets, according to Priscilla Incisa della Rocchetta, who added that a very hot start to August made it more difficult for early-ripening Merlot. As a result, Merlot has been reduced in the blend from 60% to 45%. The rich and glossy red berry, blackberry and black cherry fruit is nicely layered with balsamic herbs, damp earth and lovely mid-palate sapidity, with a creamy undertow which leads to a finish of dark chocolate and bitter herbs. Intense but not overtly concentrated, fresh and poised, there's much to love here – although it will require at least another six months to pull together harmoniously.
96pts James Suckling
This vintage shows a remarkable aromatic profile of Mediterranean herbs, cassis, black cherries, leather and earth with a kind of gamey depth. Full-bodied, it shows velvety, slightly sandy tannins with a firm structure, refreshing integrated acidity and a savory cedar finish. Drinkable now, but best in one or two years.
92pts Vinous
The 2023 Guidalberto is another terrific wine from Tenuta San Guido in this vintage. Aromatic, medium in body and gracious, the 2023 is pure charm. Crushed flowers, bright red-toned fruit, spice and blood orange all pulse through a vibrant, refreshing Guidalberto that will drink well on release. The more refined side of Bolgheri is very much on display. This is a fine effort in a year marked by heavy rains and elevated disease pressure. What a delight.
92pts Wine Spectator
Pure and juicy, revealing black cherry, blackberry, floral and Mediterranean herb notes, plus touches of spices. Light-bodied, elegant and deftly balanced, with a lingering, mouthwatering finish. This is approachable now but will benefit from another 6–12 months aging. Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Drink now through 2032. 5,400 cases imported.
Tasting Notes
Tenuta San Guido’s 2023 “Guidalberto” Toscana is a refined and expressive Super Tuscan, blending Cabernet Sauvignon with Merlot to showcase elegance, balance, and coastal vibrancy. The nose opens with aromas of blackberry, plum, and wild cherry, layered with notes of violet, cedar, and sweet spice. On the palate, it’s medium to full-bodied, with polished tannins and fresh acidity framing dark fruit, herbal undertones, and mineral tension. The finish is long and graceful, with lingering notes of graphite, tobacco, and red berries. A stylish and approachable wine from the iconic Sassicaia estate.
Wine Notes
The wines of Tenuta San Guido are three different expressions of a unique style. Sassicaia, from which everything began. Guidalberto, which after more than twenty years has reached full maturity. Le Difese, a wine of great pleasantness that best represents the Tuscan character.
Guidalberto is born as a tribute to the ancestor Guidalberto della Gherardesca, a pioneer of agriculture in the Bolgheri area who, in the early decades of the 1800s, built the first factories and churches and designed the Cypress Avenue.
Guidalberto marks the new millennium: the 2000 vintage appears on the market. The label represents the Oratory of San Guido and the wine is named after the family ancestor Guidalberto della Gherardesca, an agricultural pioneer in the Bolgheri area. It was in the first decades of the 1800’s when he built the first factories, and churches, and planned the avenue of cypress trees, the Viale dei Cipressi. These trees were initially used to mark the boundaries between the different crops. Its ornamental value, with the tall cypresses running in double rows, came after that.
